I am an atmospheric scientist in the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. My research is focused mainly on using measurements of the atmosphere to obtain information about snowfall, other precipitation, and clouds. The goals are to understand the processes that create precipitation and to provide data useful to test and improve models for climate and for numerical weather prediction. Some details are here.
I began my atmospheric science career as a graduate student at Colorado State University in the Atmospheric Science Department. That was followed by a few years at what was then the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (now the Earth System Research Laboratory’s Global Monitoring Division) working with long-term measurements of solar and infrared radiation. I then returned to CSU as a PhD student and research associate working on a range of projects related to clouds, radiative transfer, precipitation, atmospheric modeling and remote sensing.
Prior to atmospheric science and following a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, I worked in applications engineering and sales management for a leading industrial process control systems company, Fisher Controls International, for ten years. My work ranged initially to include technical sales support, field service, training, and quote preparation then progressed to managing the group responsible for providing sales support to Fisher’s international divisions. In addition to many of the lower 48 states, the work took me to Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Venezuela, Trinidad, and Mexico.
I have been a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Iowa (#P12118) since 1991, a member of the American Geophysical Union since 1993 and a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma engineering honorary societies since my undergraduate days. My Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is 0000-0001-8228-3910.
