PREFIRE launches set for May and June

Apr 01, 2024

After a little more than 7 years of development, our PREFIRE team successfully completed final mission readiness and operations readiness reviews and were declared ready to launch our two CubeSats that will systematically map far-infrared emission from the polar regions for the first time.  Rocket Lab will launch each PREFIRE CubeSat on their Electron rocket platform.  The first launch is scheduled for mid-May and the second early June.  The team hopes to release some first looks at the PREFIRE data later this summer and hopes the far-infrared observations will stimulate many new investigations into the factors that influence polar and global climate. Rocket Lab's launch announcement can be found here: https://www.rocketlabusa.com/updates/rocket-lab-to-launch-climate-change-research-mission-focused-on-arctic-ice-caps-for-nasa/ For more information about the mission, visit our PREFIRE website linked above or this recent NASA news story:  https://www.nasa.gov/missions/prefire/meet-nasas-twin-spacecraft-headed-to-the-ends-of-the-earth/
