Exoplanet Research Highlighted in EOS

Jan 10, 2019

Our research centering on using Earth observations to guide the search for habitable exoplanets is the subject of a recent highlight in the American Geophysical Union's EOS newsletter.  The work, led by Aronne Merrelli in the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) at UW-Madison, seeks to simulate what Earth might look like when viewed at the distances of typical Earth-like planets around other stars.  Observations of reflected sunlight from the full Earth disk collected by the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) were distilled down to just a single pixel representing a the very distant targets NASA will observe using the next generation satellites.  The results will be used to define specifications for the instruments aboard those satellites as well as to develop algorithms for interpreting their observations.Read more here: https://eos.org/articles/one-pixel-views-of-earth-reveal-seasonal-changes
